Job Title: ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Reports to: Principal

Primary Purpose:
Under the supervision of the Academy Principal, the Assistant Principal assists in leading and maintaining the overall instructional
program of the charter school. He/she ensures the effective implementation of the functions of the curriculum and instruction component
which includes curriculum alignment with the TEKS, insuring students achieve NCLB performance standards, assistancewith the following:
student and teacher scheduling, oversight of graduation plans, benchmarking, development of school budget,developing
campus improvement plans, preparation of students and teachers for TAKS testing and test administration,supervision and staff development
responsibilities. He/she also helps ensure that that the high school meets the terms, conditions and assurances stipulated in the application
for charter school, as awarded by the State Board of Education (SBOE), and administered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Master’s degree
Texas assistant principal or other appropriate Texas certificate
Certified Professional Development and Appraisal System (PDAS) appraiser
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Thorough understanding of school operations
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to coordinate campus support operations
Experience:
Two years experience as a classroom teacher
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Management
· Participate in development and evaluation of educational programs.
· Encourage and support development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate.
· Promote the use of technology in teaching/learning process.
· Provide leadership in the improvement of the total instructional program.
School/Organizational Climate
· Promote a positive, caring climate for learning.
· Deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
· Communicate effectively with students and staff.
School/Organizational Improvement
· Participate in development of campus improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members.
· Help principal develop, maintain, and use information systems to maintain records to track progress on campus performance
objectives and academic excellence indicators.
· Assist in developing school standards
· Recommend instruments and procedures for determining the degree to which aims and purpose of the school are being met.
· Conduct conferences on student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers as needed.
Personnel Management
· Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences.
· Serve as second appraiser for designated teacher appraisal system as needed.
· Assist principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new staff.
Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management
· Supervise operations and administer school in principal’s absence.
· Help plan daily school activities by participating in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activity schedules.
· Supervise reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with attendance clerk on follow-up investigations.
· Work with department heads and faculty to compile annual budget requests based on documented program needs.
· Requisition supplies, textbooks, and equipment; check inventory; maintain records; and verify receipts for materials.
· Assist with safety inspections and perform safety-drill practice activities.
· Coordinate other support services.
· Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
· Program and supervise security measure for the school plant and personnel.
· Supervise the control of parking lot.
· Maintain and keep accurate records of the distribution of building keys.
· Secure substitute teachers in the absence of any regular faculty members.
· Coordinate with the Director of Maintenance all needed repairs.
· Assign and supervise hall and building duty.
· Conduct regular fire and civil defense drills.
· Maintain the non-instructional equipment, supplies, and machines necessary for the function of the school.
· Maintain the permanent furniture in good working order.
Student Management
· Ensure that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods.
· Help to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior.
· Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
· Responsible at all times for student behavior on the campus, handling all discipline cases up to and including recommendation for suspension and expulsion.
· Minimize teacher-student problems with regard to discipline.
· Hold parent conferences regarding student discipline as needed.
· Minimize student problems with juvenile and law-enforcing officers.
· Develop liaison with other county social agencies in assisting the student.
· Implement and oversee the Student Code of Conduct rules and regulations on the campus.
· Supervise the enforcement of a standardized discipline management program for the classroom and follow-up observations.
Professional Growth and Development
· Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
School/Community Relations
· Articulate the school’s mission to community and solicit its support in realizing mission.
· Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
· Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
· Represent the principal at various events.
· Attend ARD committee meetings in the principal’s absence.
Essential Functions
· Act as administrator in charge of the ESL program and LPAC meetings.
· Control and supervise administration of all state assessments (TAKS, TELPAS, End-of-course, Field testing, etc).
· Supervise student breakfast program.
· Approve placement of and regulation of student assistants.
· Maintain inventory of supplies, equipment, forms, etc.
· Perform any other duties assigned by the Principal.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Share supervisory responsibility for professional staff with school principal. Supervise teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals, clerical personnel and others as assigned.

Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions. Occasional
District-wide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
